The most common types of car accidents injuries are soft tissue injuries, including sprains and strains. Thankfully, our chiropractor serving Austin and the surrounding communities of Cedar Park and Round Rock can diagnose your injuries and develop a treatment plan to lower your pain and improve your range of motion.
Sprains and Strains as the Result of an Auto Injury
When most people think of auto injuries, they think of deep lacerations and broken bones. However, few realize that the most common injuries are sprains and strains from low speed car accidents. One of the most common auto injuries that our Cedar Park and Round Rock chiropractor sees is a spine sprain. It occurs when the ligaments in the back are stretched beyond their normal range of motion.
Symptoms of Sprain or Strain
Sprains and strains cause pain, bruising, swelling inflammation and a loss of range of motion. If the injury was the result of a car accident, individuals may not experience any symptoms for up to 24 to 48 hours. For this reason, our Cedar Park and Round Rock chiropractor recommends scheduling an appointment shortly after your accident.
Spine, Back, and Neck Sprain or Strain
When a car suddenly decelerates from hitting an object or another vehicle, it puts tremendous stress on the spine. Strains or sprains of the spine can occur in the lower back (lumbar region) or in the neck (cervical region). When the spine sprain or strain occurs in the neck, it is often determined to be whiplash. When the sprain or strain occurs in the lower back, it is usually referred to as a pulled muscle or a strained back.
During a car accident, your body can be jerked in any direction. While wearing a seat belt will limit your injuries, you may still be left with a sprain or strain of your lower back. This occurs when the ligaments, tendons or muscles are stretched beyond their useful range of motion, which causes a sudden loss in flexibility, weakened back muscles and pain. If the swelling or inflammation affects the sciatic nerve, it can also cause pain and numbness in the legs.
During an auto accident, the head is generally unrestrained, even if you have your headrest properly adjusted. When the impact occurs, your head is thrown forward and bounced against the headrest, which stretches all the muscles and ligaments. A mild to moderate auto injury of the neck might be referred to as a neck sprain or strain. A severe injury to the neck is often referred to as whiplash.
